A fifty-sixth minute second half goal from Shamar Wilson and skilful goal-keeping by 14-year-old custodian Donte Forde ensured Dolphin Secondary edged South Ruimveldt Secondary 1-nil in their opening round encounter of the Digicel/Powerade Nationwide Under-18 schools Football tournament at the Campton ground in the City Zone, yesterday afternoon.
The energised Wilson converted from a well orchestrated build-up and fired a powerful right-footer from about 12 yards inside the 18-yard box to leave the South Ruimveldt keeper (Lloyd McCurden) stranded going to his right as the ball sped along the ground to crash into the back of the net.
The live wire Wilson then acrobatically celebrated with a double back flick as his teammates, including pint sized striker Leon Richardson, the nephew of National player Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, rejoiced.
While it was Dolphin who eventually registered the winning goal after goal-less but fast-paced first half and enjoyed more possession, it was the South Ruimveldt strikers who executed more shots on goal.
But the sure-handed and talented Forde ensured that he was not beaten once, with some impressive saves, once jumping full length to safely pull down the ball with both hands.
The tempo slowed in the second half as the blistering sun and sandy patches, especially towards the Eastern goal, took its toll on the teenagers.
Joel Pollard displayed admirable talent although he had little to show for it when the final whistle was blown while dreadlocked defender Shawn Collins showed encouraging skill, especially in ‘heading’ away corners as Dolphin, backed by a noisy contingent of its students began the competition on a successful note.
