– cop allegedly involved
The Brazilian Mining and General Association are taking a strong stance as it relates to Brazilian nationals being reportedly robbed of their gold.
This is according to its Secretary, Antonio Szala, who explained that just recently, a police officer, and officers from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) went into a mining community and under the pretext of seizing illegal gold, robbed a few Brazilian Nationals of about eight ounces of raw gold.
Szala told said that the people were told that the gold had to be seized, since a percentage of it was not given to officials. However, Szala noted that this was indeed, not done, since the Brazilians did not know who they should give it to.
The man added that without any explanation, the “officials” provided the Brazilians with just a telephone number and left. This number led officials of the Brazilian Mining Association to the police officer involved.
Szala told Kaieteur News that after being confronted, the police officer pleaded with the officials and promised to have the gold returned to the rightful owners. But this was not done, and the aforementioned mining association promises to deal with the matter at a higher level. A report of the incident is expected to be sent to the GGMC for an investigation to begin.
Szala said that he will also be meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Natural Resources Ministry to address this particular plight of Brazilian nationals.
