The dye has been cast and tomorrow night 10 professional boxers and 8 amateurs will step into the ring and for the first time in the history of the sport residents of the West Coast Demerara will be afforded the opportunity of witnessing those bouts live when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) stages the 28th Edition of Guyana Fight Night (GFN) boxing card at the Uitvlugt Community Centre, tomorrow night.
This ground has witnessed many an exciting football encounter and for that reason anticipation is high as residents along the West Coast corridor prepare for a night of fistic fury. Indeed, whereas much is expected from the professionals, for the first time the amateur fights promise just as much excitement.
When the action gets underway at 20:00hrs, Jamie Kelman of the Young Achievers Boxing Gym (YABG) will square off with Quancy Wright of the Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG) in the 50-54lbs class followed by Squalie Wright (EBG) up against Shemar Bumbury of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) in the 75-79lbs division. Wright’s gym mate, Shaka Moore, will take on Stephon Green of the Harpy Eagles (HE) in the 105-109lbs category while Quincy Boyce (GDF) will bring the amateur segment to a climax when he faces Travis Hubbard (HE) in the 118-125lbs division.
Organiser of amateur bouts, Terrence Poole explained that that since the card would be held on the West Coast it would be justified to match fighters of that area against those from Georgetown. As such, three of the bouts will feature boxers out of the Essequibo Boxing Gym against their Georgetown counterparts.
The Boyce/Hubbard shindig is the exception to the rule but the organizers explained that these two pugilists had squared off before in an earlier edition of GFN which Hubbard had won. Boyce was adamant that he had done enough to win and begged for a second chance to prove himself. He will receive that opportunity tomorrow night and yesterday afternoon he said that he intends to reverse his fortunes.
Otherwise, the professionals will support the amateur efforts as they will get into action 30 minutes after that segment of the card. While the Revlon Lake/Dexter Gonsalves jnr/lightweight title clash is expected to produce fireworks, the 4 rounds middleweight, scrap between Eversley Browne and debutant, Romeo Norville, is shaping up to be a humdinger.
Brown, a lanky fighter with a very good jab and right cross was not at yesterday’s forum but his coach, Ovid London spoke on his behalf. A clearly hyped up London promised all manner of punishment for Norville. He said that he has taken his charge through his drills “and I have been very cruel,” declared London.
He said that the fact that his charge could have endured such cruelty convinces him (London) that he is ready for battle. “It is that very brand of cruelty that my fighter will display tomorrow night,” he proclaimed.
For his part, Norville preferred to remain quiet but promised that by the end of the bout he would be the one with the raised hand. This irked London who then promised that his fighter would take out Norville in the 3rd round. That threat finally managed to elicit Norville’s response, “You promise to take me out in three but you will not be around that long; I will knock you out in the second round,” declared a clearly agitated Norville.
He may be a young professional but Norville has made an impression in the amateur arena, winning 91 of his bouts while conceding 14. Laured Stewart also makes his professional debut against Anson Green, also over 4 rounds. The latter boxer is a relatively young professional with a 2-1 record but he said that his experience exceeds Stewart’s.
But Stewart is no slouch and has represented Guyana several times in Barbados. His father, Laurex, was a classy fighter and the younger Stewart has demonstrated similar acumen. However, he will have to prove that he is capable of a smooth transition into the professional arena. He thinks he is; Green said he intends to prove that Stewart is not yet ready to mingle among the big boys.
In other bouts, Kelsey George will come up against veteran, Troy Lewis, in a 4 rounds middleweight encounter while Leon Moore tackles Errol Trotman also over 6 rounds.
The boasts are brazen and it appears as though most of the bouts will be abbreviated. Whichever way it goes, at least one thing is certain, West coast resident are guaranteed a night of fistic fury.
Fans are assured of uninterrupted entertainment should it rain; administrators have said that they are prepared for such eventualities and the ring would be set up under a large tent with similar facilities for patrons. An admission fee of $1,500 will be charged for any part of the ground. Musical entertainment will be provided by Slingerz Sound System.
