Executive, Ronald Webster, has retained the Chairmanship of Private Sector Commission (PSC), after beating out Clinton Urling yesterday following the business body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The incumbent Webster, the Managing Director of Caribbean Containers Inc., a paper recycling company at Farm, East Bank Demerara, won by a landslide of 16 votes to four.
Webster was a former Chairman of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) who took over the Chairmanship of PSC last July after the premature resignation of its new leader, Yog Mahadeo.
Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Private Enterprise Development (IPED), Ramesh Persaud, is the new Vice Chairman, while former Chairman, Ramesh Dookhoo of Banks DIH is the Secretary. John Willems of the Forest Products Association was elected as Treasurer.
Speaking shortly after the voting, Urling, whose family owns the popular German’s Restaurant, said that the results indicate that the membership clearly wanted continuity as against the changes he wanted to implement. Urling said he declined the Vice Chairman position.
The PSC is a vocal advocacy business body that has been working closely with government and stakeholders in recent years on critical issues like security and trade.
Urling is the current President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce of Industry (GCCI).
The businessman, in announcing his candidacy for the PSC Chairmanship, had said that under his watch, GCCI had introduced a number of changes and initiatives that resulted in enormous value for its private sector members and the wider society as a whole.
GCCI had indicated that Urling intended to bring that same level of leadership to the PSC by working with its membership and other stakeholders to ensure a stable social and economic environment for businesses to succeed.
The Private Sector Commission was established in 1992, by a number of associations and business entities. It is governed by a council comprising heads of all members of the sectoral organizations and a number of elected members. The Council is headed by a Chairman who can serve a maximum of two consecutive one-year terms. Any Chairman who has served two consecutive terms may be eligible for subsequent re-election.
There are 40 corporate and sectoral members of the PSC.
