GTM 3-day Inter County cricket…Demerara secure 1st innings points from Presidents’ X1

The spinners dominated on a sluggish spin-friendly Everest pitch and heavy outfield yesterday on the opening day of the second round GTM Under-19 three-day cricket match between Demerara and the President’s X1.

By the close the President’s X1 were five without loss in their second innings from two overs after being bundled out for a paltry 81 from 37.4 overs to which the host responded with 141 all out to take a 60-run first innings lead.
In sweltering heat and watched by a handful of spectators, 17-year-old leg-spinner Steven Sankar grabbed 5-17 for Demerara to follow up his three-wicket haul in the first match.
Sixteen-year-old left-arm spinner Mark Hamilton captured 6-47 and along with off-spinner Vishal Narayan who opened the bowling, took 3-39 as they took nine wickets between them to orchestrate a Demerara collapse despite a second consecutive half-century from Skipper Kamesh Yadram, who was ninth out for an attractive 69 with nine fours and a six.
The left-handed Yadram, on the back of an even unbeaten fifty in the opening game against Essequibo at Eve Leary played an array of well timed drives before he bowled by the nagging Hamilton at 133-9.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who this year became only the second player to play in the same Regional First Class match with his father (Shiv Chanderpaul) following the pairing of Sir Leary Constantine and his 48-year old father in 1928, failed to build on a good foundation when he fell for 21.
First match centurion Brian Sattaur (17) added 24 with the left-handed Chanderpaul, who then put together 22 for the third wicket with Yadram after Andrew Gibson was removed by Narayan for a duck at 24-2.
Demerara slumped to 86-6 before Yadram and Sankar added 31 for the ninth wicket in the best partnership of the innings before Sankar, who clobbered two six in his cameo 14, departed at 117-8.
Demerara used just one fast bowler for three overs in two spells on the docile track which offered plenty of turn for the spinners as Hamilton, who did not play in the first match, and Narayan ripped through the lower order.
Earlier, Ryan Shun top scored with 30 and got token support from Akeem Wallace (15*) and Narayan (13) as the President’s X1 capitulated to a double figure total. Kevin Paul (1-15), Shivram Persaud (1-12) and Stephan Brown (1-8) backed up Sankar.
Anthony Bhupdeo (2*) and Shun (2*) were the not out batmen in the President’s XI second innings as they reduced the deficit to 55.
