Guyanese Narsingh Deonarine enjoyed a good all-round day at the office yesterday as West Indies ‘A’ romped to an emphatic 90-run victory over Sri Lanka ‘A’ in the second ODI at the Grenada National Stadium to level the 3-match series 1-1.
The 29-year-old Deonarine, with 14 Tests and 25 ODIs to his name, supported Jamaican Nkrumah Bonner (61) and Trinidadian Lendl Simmons (40) with a run-a-ball 34 with four fours to propel the Caribbean side to 240-9 off their allotted 50 overs.
The off-spinner from Albion in Berbice then returned to bag 3-25 to take the Man-of-the-Match as the visitors were bowled out for 147 in 47.1 overs despite a fighting half-century (51) from Dimuth Karunarathne and 41 from Niroshan Dickwella.
After electing to bat on a good track and fast outfield, Simmons and Bonner fashioned a solid 89-run opening partnership as Bonner’s 97-ball 64 was decorated with five fours and a six. Simmons supported well, hitting fours and a six in his attractive 40 from 56 balls.
When Kirk Edwards (5) and Bonner departed in the space of five runs the home team were 116-3 but the left-handed Deonarine and home boy Andre Fletcher (30) carried the score to 168 with a 52-run partnership before Fletcher was bowled by Suranga Lakmal.
Deonarine who has nine First-Class hundreds, was then run out at 181-5 in the 41st over while Devon Thomas (26) and the towering Jason Holder (14) ensured the West Indies got to within 10 runs away from a 250 total.
Chathuranga De Silva took 3-43 and Suranga Lakmal 2-59 for Sri Lanka who lost their way after a promising 94-run opening start from Karunarathne and Dickwella.
Once Left arm spinner Nikita Miller got rid of the potentially dangerous Karunarathne, Guyana Captain Veerasammy Permaul bowled Dickwella and Deonarine picked up three wickets in rapid succession to leave the Asians on 115-5, a position from which they never recovered as eight batsmen failed to pass single digit scores.
Miller (2-32) and left arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell (2-25) supported Deonarine to keep the series alive going into final game tomorrow.
