…doctor still on the job
An investigation has been launched into the incident involving the doctor implicated for allegedly slapping his 25-year-old patient while tending to her bleeding nose at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Thursday.
Dr. Mohamed Yacoob, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Surgeon at the New Amsterdam Hospital and former Medical Director of the New Amsterdam Hospital, allegedly slapped Yolanda Sutton of Cumberland Village while tending to her on Thursday.
The woman stated that three nurses as well as her co- worker and friend witnessed the incident.
She has since reported the matter to the Central Police Station in the town and the matter will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for further action and advice.
This newspaper has been reliably informed that the doctor was still making rounds at the facility up to yesterday. According to one source, the most that can happen to the doctor is that he can be slapped with an assault charge.
No one at the Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA), including the Chairman, Mr. Anil Beharry, CEO Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, or the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the New Amsterdam Hospital, Mrs. Gloria Beharry, was prepared to comment on the matter.
Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Mr. Alan Johnson, could only say that the police are dealing with the case. Beharry noted that he does not have enough information about the matter.
Attempts to make contact with Dr. Yacoob proved futile.
Sutton, speaking from home yesterday, stated that she sought private medical help from Dr. John Austin after being slapped on Thursday and her nose bleed has stopped. Her father told this newspaper that the family is contemplating legal action as well, but this will be based on the outcome of the investigation.
This latest issue being dealt with by the BRHA comes on heels of criticisms of the body when it comes to health care delivery and complaints by members of the public.
Parliamentary Secretary Mr. Joseph Hamilton, while in Berbice a few months ago, had promised to institute an investigation to see where some systems have failed and how they can be improved. Government, he stated, will be looking to review the establishments and functioning of Regional Health Authorities (RHA’s), to see where the frameworks may have failed, identify their strengths and propose a way forward.
Creating a BRHA was an experiment to see how health care services can be boosted in Region Six. The umbrella body is governed by a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, MP along with a Board. The Chairman of the current Board is Mr. Anil Beharry, Manager of New Building Society in New Amsterdam. A new body was sworn- in last July.
