Leonora Secondary School defied the pluck and determination of St John’s Secondary School to earn a 3-1 win when the curtains went up on the Georgetown leg of the Digicel Under-18 School’s Football Championships at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Ground, Carifesta Avenue, yesterday afternoon.
Andrew Fowler (11th), Tevin Garraway (46th) and Gavin Graham (85th) were on target for the winners while Stephon Bentick in the 53rd minute netted St John’s consolation goal.
Both teams started at a hectic pace, each attempting to gain the advantage. Gavin Graham almost sent Lenora ahead in the early exchanges when he latched on to a loose ball and dribbled all the way into the opposition’s box but spoiled the effort with a lame kick that slid to the left of St John’s goal.
Fowler made amends shortly afterwards when his powerful right footer left the St John’s custodian stranded as the ball settled in the nets. St John’s Secondary School responded almost immediately when Sylvern Beaton trapped the ball midway down the field, spun and sprinted to the opposition’s goal.
What looked like a sure chance was wasted as the wily player failed to find support from his team mates who were nowhere near when he crossed the ball. The players went in at the half with Leonora Secondary enjoying a 1-nil advantage.
The second half started at a hectic pace and the whistle had barely sounded when Garraway widened the margin for his team with a pin-point strike that breached the opposition’s goal and sent Leonora Secondary up 2-0.
St John’s Secondary refused to say die and was eventually rewarded when Bentick scored to narrow the score 2-1. Hopes dwindled for his team when Graham tucked in the third goal for the eventual winners. As expected, there were many botched chances as the players were forced to battle against each other as well as the sodden and muddy field after early rains had subsided.
Leonora Secondary emerged champions of the West Demerara leg when the championships were held last year. That team will now wait for the match between West Demerara Secondary and Endeavour Secondary on Monday June 24 to oppose the winner. That match will be played over on West Demerara.
Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean, GFF President Christopher Matthias along with VP Rawleston Adams met the teams before the kick off of the game.
Meanwhile, Waramadong hammered Three Miles Secondary 6-0 yesterday in Bartica, details will follow in tomorrow’s edition.
