Looking smart, slick and ready for the occasion a police contingent led the ceremonial opening of the June 2013 session of the criminal assizes of the Berbice High Court on Tuesday. There was the usual pomp and ceremony outside the Berbice High Court building on Esplanade and Vryheid Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The parade which included the march past was commanded by Cadet Officer Alister Roberts with Inspector Dennis Stephen the parade Inspector and Sergeant Kwesi Gravesande. They led the 24-man strong contingent in an impressive display accompanied by the police drum corps.
Also accompanying the parade were Senior Superintendent Clifton Hicken, Cadet Officer O.Halley, Inspectors B.Williams and Jagroop.
Justice Dawn Gregory who will be presiding over the criminal session of the Berbice High Court along with Justice Nareshwar Harnanan, who will be looking into matters in the Civil Court, took the salute.
The judges were escorted by ‘B’ Division Commander Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph and Cadet Officer Jermaine Dufu.
When the January session closed on Monday, a report presented by Senior Superintendent of Prisons and Officer-in-Charge of the New Amsterdam Prisons Linden Cornett, showed that there were 42 persons in jail awaiting trial with an alarming 37 for murder.
Two are for sexual penetration, one for robbery under arms, one for possession of firearm without licence and one for escape from lawful custody.
