The quick action by public-spirited citizens and the Guyana Fire Service saved a five-year-old girl who was trapped in her North Sophia home at the time of a fire.
According to an eyewitness, about 9:45 am yesterday at lot 93 Block ‘F’ North Sophia, she had just arrived home when she was startled by the sound of a child screaming.
The woman said that when she looked through her window she saw black smoke emanating from the bottom flat of the building and heard the child continuously screaming for help.
“The grandmother who was upstairs heard her screaming and keep asking her what happen but is couple boys who been on the corner run in the place and bruck down the door,” the eyewitness said.
The resident added that she had already dialed the fire service which arrived promptly and was able to join forces with the two men and remove the child from the house.
Another resident who declined to be identified said that he believed that the child was left alone in the bottom flat of the home while other family members were upstairs. The man added that the occupants who have been in the area for a number of years “are not the social type”. He added that he did not realize that someone was living in the bottom flat.
“Although I vex with them for what happen I feel it for them because they now start extending and renovating the house. It just calls for a little more responsibility. But it could have been worse,” the man said.
The interior of the structure was destroyed but in the interim, scores of residents had gathered outside of the home as rumours surfaced that the child had perished in the blaze. After the child emerged with her mother who was said to be an employee of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, residents returned to their homes.
Investigations are ongoing.
