While the party has still not formally addressed the completed local government reform bills that were being dealt with at the level of the Select Parliamentary Committee, it will be contesting Local Government Elections.
This was confirmed by the Executive Secretary of the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Zulficar Mustapha, who yesterday addressed members while at a press engagement held at Freedom House on Robb Street.
“The party will contest local government elections,” said Mustapha who added that the party supporters and activists “would wish us to be in the developmental process at all levels.”
The Special Select Committee, on Friday, completed the legislative amendments and now that the Bills have been amended, a report will be presented to the Committee on June 28 by the Attorney General’s office for vetting. Later, it would be presented to the parliament by the Local Government Minister Ganga Persaud, before being made law with President Donald Ramotar’s assent.
Minister Ganga Persaud had earlier accused Chairperson of the Select Committee APNU’s Basil Williams of trying to stymie Local Government elections by reintroducing issues already dealt with as it related to the Bills.
The Minister had accused Williams of seeking to change the composition of the Local Government Commission, established to oversee and regulate the functioning of Local Democratic Organs (NDCS and Municipalities).
He also charged that Williams wanted to remove existing powers of the Local Government Minister in relation to what the Minister will retain and what will be devolved to Local Government Commission.
