Chanderpaul says stint in England was helpful

National opener Tagenarine ‘Brandon’ Chanderpaul, the son of dependable West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, recently told Kaieteur Sport that his short stint in England was very helpful.

The 17 year old Chanderpaul returned to his native Guyana after representing the Stainsby Hall Cricket Club in the Derbyshire Division one 50-over competition. He played 7 games in this tournament and batted 6 times with a highest score of 110 not out against Ambergate Cricket Club, helping his team to an eight wicket victory in the process; he averaged 46. He also featured in 2 cup matches involving teams from Divisions 1, 2 and 3, scoring one fifty. In addition, Chanderpaul registered 3 centuries in the Sunday league. He also made an unbeaten 54 playing against Derbyshire, a match in which his father Shivnarine scored 84 not out.
Chanderpaul said that it was a bit tough at first but he adjusted well to the conditions. “The ball was moving around more and the pitches were a bit slow at first, but were getting harder and the ball was coming on faster in the latter stages. It was a good experience, playing there helped to increase my concentration; I learned to leave a lot of balls as well. Batting on the different surfaces improved my technique. It gives me an idea as to what to expect overseas and I gained more knowledge of how to build an innings”, added Chanderpaul.
He stated that his father was very instrumental in helping him to adjust to the conditions. “My father helped me a lot, he told me to be vey watchful, play the ball late and do not chase the wide deliveries. I practiced a lot with him in the indoor facilities using the bowling which was very helpful, I did a lot of fitness work as well”, he informed.
Chanderpaul now switches his attention to the upcoming Guyana Cricket Board Inter County U-19 tournament. “I am looking forward to the inter-county competition. We have some talented players at this level and I think the tournament will be keenly contested. I am also hoping for a fruitful regional season and help Guyana win both titles”, said Chanderpaul.
Chanderpaul pointed out that he is working hard on his game and wants to get selected in the West Indies U-19 team. He indicated that he will share his experience with the young cricketers.
