Mark Smith, a South Turkeyen policeman had to be consoled by his neighbours, family and friends yesterday even as he watched his wooden home and household assets go up in flames.
Up to press time, there was no official cause for the fire that completely destroyed Smith’s South Turkeyen home around 15:00 hours but, speculations are that it was electrical.
When smoke was first seen coming from the house, no one was home. Kaieteur News understands that an immediate neighbour first saw it and alerted members of the community.
Even though the Guyana Fire Service was immediately contacted, fire fighting was, for the greater part done by members of the community.
Residents said that when the fire tender eventually came it had to source water from the area. “Dem use water from de drain, people tank and thing cause they come to out a fire with an empty tank but when they finally get water, they work.”
The house stood on four concrete pillars 15 inches off the ground. Smith said he lived there since 2006 but extended the structure only last year Christmas.
Smith told Kaieteur News that he hadn’t any electrical problem and lost lots of household electrical items in the blaze. Smith said he also recently purchased a chair set. The father of two said he was at his fianceé’s residence when the fire started.
As is customary at any typical fire scene in Guyana, residents of the community, coming as far as three streets away, formed human barricades in the narrow street as they watched all that the young man worked for go up in flames.
What wasn’t typical, however, is that tears were in the eyes of many at the scene.
Smith who is a member of the Guyana Police Force could only stand in his yard watching firemen douse the embers. He tried to keep the faith. However, he broke down into tears when he came out of the yard and greeted some who offered moral and financial support.
