Guyana definitely has talent in most sports disciplines and there is no doubt that one of the major factors affecting its development is the lack of Proper training facilities.
Recently Members of the Transport and Harbours Sports Club of Thomas Lands told Kaieteur Sport that they are upset with the construction of a tower which is currently taking place on the ground.
It is understood that permission was given by the Minister of Public Works Robinson Benn for the E-Governance tower to be constructed on the facility. Members of the club said that the tower which encroaches on the ground will reduced the size of the facility and they fear that as a result cricket will no longer be played there. They said that he tower will cause the boundary on the western side of the ground to be pulled in by a number of yards which will lead to the other boundaries to being shortened. They stated that they did not get to use the ground for 7 years because of its awful condition, and efforts to get the ground in a playable state are moving at snail’s pace.
Members informed that since the former manager (Orin Joseph) passed away nothing is being done to improve the club. They said that the club generates funds from dances, fitness sessions and other activities that are being held at the club house from time to time and they are not sure where it is going. The club participates in cricket competitions organized by the Georgetown Cricket Association at all levels and has over fifty youths who are looking forward to the development of the ground so that they can use it for practise sessions.
The club currently has a caretaker, bartender and a captain. There is no executive and the members do not know to whom they should pay their monthly fees. They are appealing to the minister to use his good office and halt the construction, upgrade the facility and open the bar.
The members are also calling on the authorities to put systems in place so that elections can be held for office bearers.
Just recently, residents of Plaisance on the East Coast challenged the construction of a similar tower, mounting protests over the encroachment of the community ground, which eventually forced the authorities to halt the construction and find another venue for the erection of the tower.
