There has been an increase of 10 road fatalities at the end of May 2013 in comparison to the same period in 2012, police statistics revealed, even though there was an overall one percent decrease in serious crime.
In 2012, there were 36 deaths from 35 accidents. There has been an increase this year— 46 fatalities from 43 accidents up to the end of last month. There have been two deaths recorded so far for this month.
The total number of reports of serious crimes between January to May last was 1604 compared to 1621 for the same period last year.
According to the police, some of the offences monitored are murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, larceny, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape and kidnapping.
So far, there have been 51 murders this year, the same as last year. Of the 51 murders for this year, 23 were of the disorderly type, nine were committed during armed robberies, one was execution type, and four were domestic related. The other 14 are so far undetermined.
At the end of May 2013, robbery under arms overall had decreased by 14 percent with 372 reports compared to 432 for the same period in 2012.
The statistics indicate a decrease of 11 percent in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; and a 19 percent decrease in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
So far, pedestrians have been the main road users affected with 11 such persons having lost their lives at the end of May.
In addition, nine motor cyclists, nine pedal cyclists, seven motor vehicle drivers, one pillion rider and nine passengers of motor vehicles also lost their lives.
Speeding continues to be a major contributory factor in fatal accidents. It was the cause of 35 of the 43 fatal accidents recorded at the end of May 2013.
Traffic enforcement by the police during the period January to May 2013 resulted in a total of 35,843 cases being made against errant motorists; of these total 9,196 cases were for speeding.
