Murder of sawmill supervisor…Slain man’s mother still traumatized
It has been almost two weeks since 26-year-old Kemraj Singh’s battered and mutilated body was found in a sawmill compound, and his relatives are becoming increasingly frustrated at the inability of the police to catch his killer.
Kaieteur News was told that the slain man’s mother, Savatri Singh, had to be hospitalised this week after his cremation.
Police are seeking to question Tularam Baichand, a resident of West Coast Demerara. Kaieteur News has spoken at least thrice via cell phone to an individual who identified himself as Baichand.

During the conversations, ‘Baichand’ proclaimed his innocence, but indicated that he had no intention of submitting himself to the police for questioning. He also admitted to knowing Kemraj Singh but refused to speak about the 17-year-old girl that he and Singh had wanted to marry.
Kaieteur News has obtained a photograph of Baichand, who is dark in complexion, has long hair and is reportedly about five feet, five inches tall. There are reports that he may have cut his hair.
Baichand, who drives a ‘bush truck’, reportedly has a tattoo of a bull on one of his shoulders.
Police said that they have searched a Greenwich Park, West Bank Demerara house for the suspect but have failed to find him.
But some of the slain man’s relatives believe that police are not doing enough to find his killers.
“We are not satisfied how the police are operating,” an aunt told Kaieteur News on Thursday.
According to the aunt, her nephew had told her that ‘they’ would kill him before his intended wedding to the 17-year-old. The aunt said that she had warned him not to return to Land of Canaan until he had married his lover.
Kaieteur News understands that a friend had visited Singh at the sawmill shack on the night of May 27. At the time, Singh was having dinner and the sawmill supervisor told the friend about his upcoming wedding.
The friend reportedly left after Singh indicated that he wanted to rest.
Around 14:50 hrs the following day Singh’s body, with throat cut and head bashed in, was found on a bed in a shack at his employer’s Land of Canaan sawmill. A bloody hammer was found nearby. There was no sign of forced entry.
