Georgetown got off to a winning start when play in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter Association U-17 50-Over competition commenced yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground. The host defeated East Bank Demerara by 9 wickets after the game was reduced to 23 overs due to a late start caused by rain.
East Bank batted first and were pegged back by purposeful bowling by Georgetown, they never recovered after being reduced to 20-3 and were eventually bowled out for 64 in 19.3 overs. Dextroy Williams was the only batsman that reached double figures with 25 (2×4) as medium pacer Carlton James grabbed 4-10 from 5 overs, while Samuel McKenzie took 2-11 from 4 overs and Shamar Graham 2-19 from 4.3 overs.
Openers Tevin Imlach and Joshua Ram put Georgetown on course for victory with a stand of 27 before Ram pushed forward to off spinner Michael Sultan and was bowled through the gates for 10 in the 6th over.
Skipper Sherfene Rutherford joined Imlach and saw them home with a second wicket partnership of 38. Imlach was not out on 26, while Rutherford was unbeaten on 21 (1×4) when victory was achieved off the last ball of the 16th over. Sultan ended with 1-13 off 4 overs.
The competition continues today with Georgetown playing West Demerara at Everest and East Coast facing East Bank at police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. (Zaheer Mohamed)
