Yesterday, Johall Abram Mauget, 31, of 100 Mount Vermont, apartment 107, Canada, was brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates Court, where he was made to answer to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The particulars of the charge stated that on June 4, last, the defendant had in his possession, 2.615 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded guilty.
Court documents revealed that on the date in question the defendant was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Ranking officers were conducting a search and found a white substance which they suspected to be cocaine, tucked neatly beneath a false bottom of a suitcase.
The unrepresented Canadian was subsequently fined $30,000 and sentenced to three years imprisonment.
