A Barbadian national, who came to Guyana in 2007 for the Cricket World Cup, was only allowed a six-month stay but ended up over staying his time as he found new love and was able to “find work and build a family in Guyana.”
Devon Atwell, 53, pleaded guilty to the charge of overstaying which was read to him yesterday by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
The particulars of the charge stated that, within the time of April 4, 2007 and June 4, 2013, he overstayed his time without getting a legal extension.
Court documents revealed that Atwell, who is a holder of a Barbadian passport, came to Guyana on April 4, 2007 during the Cricket World Cup. He was not stamped in but was given a wrist band which allowed him six months’ stay. After that time expired, the defendant continued to live and work in Guyana without extending the time.
On June 4, 2013, the defendant’s landlord reported to the police that he is a Barbadian national who has overstayed his time. The defendant was then arrested and charged for the said offence.
Atwell. of 388 Ganges Street, Prashad Nagar, who was unrepresented, told the court, “I am really sorry, I have formed a life in Guyana and I was tardy in getting the necessary documents to extend my time.
I am really sorry, but I am working on getting the required documents in order your worship.”
Based on the fact that the Atwell’s documents are currently being prepared to grant him an extension, he was fined $40,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
