Telford Layne, a miner of 3264 Lamaha Place, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown burst into tears after being remanded to prison yesterday by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry.
The defendant appeared at court one of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He has been accused of obtaining money by false pretense.
The court heard that between December 4, 2012 and February 18, 2013, Layne obtained in excess of $13 million from Wayne Hubbard, under the pretext that he was the owner of 12 plots of land at Curricurri Point in the interior, knowing same to be false.
The defendant was not required to enter a plea to the charge. His Attorney Lyndon Amsterdam in an application for bail told the court that his client is married with two minor children and his wife is expecting their third child soon. The lawyer explained that the lands which his client sold were allocated to him by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, (GGMC).
The matter was prosecuted by Inspector Stephen Telford. Telford contended that even under that circumstance, the defendant is not authorized to sell the lands; the lawful sale of such lands is only via GGMC.
The virtual complainant subsequently informed the court that he had the responsibility of capturing the defendant who had been avoiding the police. Hubbard reportedly picked up Layne, after he was seen standing in the compound of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.
The case was stood down for a while, as police personnel verified whether the claims of the complainant were truthful. As a result, it was confirmed that Layne was placed on station bail but later failed to report to the police station. He was on the run since December last.
Layne was remanded to prison until June 12.
