DEAR EDITOR,
I am a Guyanese of early adulthood, equally enthusiastic as every other progressive youth including yourself and your establishment who desire the rule of Law, equality and justice at all levels of society, regardless of race, religion, political persuasion or economic position. I favoured your newspapers because it highlights and educates the Guyanese public on matters and developments which usually are not published in the other news publications. Some of these are the appeal for a Public Procurement Commission, police excesses, domestic violence and violent criminal activities.
On the contrary, while you may not have a personal relationship with President Donald Ramotar; history has shown and you will attest that he is a person of high integrity, modesty and a servant of the people, similar to that of Hon. Cheddi Jagan.
I share with your two instances which highlight President Donald Ramotar’s integrity and selflessness:
During Donald Ramotar’s tenure duties as General Secretary of the People Progressive Party (P.P.P) he attended a fund raising event in New York, U.S.A for the P.P.P’s campaign at which time one generous P.P.P supporter proposed a substantial gift for him personally.
I witnessed President Donald Ramotar’s immediate refusal and requested for that gift to be submitted to the accounts of the P.P.P of which an official receipt was issued.
In the early past, Donald Ramotar attended the commissioning of an enterprise in Guyana which is owned by a very successful goldminer. At that event the enterprise owner also proposed a sparkling gift of gold to President Donald Ramotar. Being a person of integrity, modesty, selfless and a servant of the people, he politely refused the said gift.
Mr. Editor, no human being is perfect. But a man’s integrity and dignity must always be upheld, especially the integrity, dignity and honour of Hon. Present Donald Ramotar.
I appeal to you to withdraw the AFC “Paid for by the Alliance For Change” advertisements which seeks to discredit and defame Hon. President Donald Ramotar by stating, “Is it that he wants to continue the trend of giving special preference to friends, family and party supports?”
Everyone knows that Hon. President Donald Ramotar’s immediate and extended family members are among the lower income earners in Guyana. They are simple, easygoing, decent persons. I assure you that he could have changed these economic conditions years ago, but this is not his nature.
Please exercise caution, care and consideration in your practice of a “Professional Journalism”. Desist from defamation of character and personal vendettas.
I wish you and your publication to prosper and grow from strength to strength for I remain a loyal supporter of you cause.
Hannah Mohammed
