What was supposed to be a well planned heist by bandits was thwarted by a brave businessman who used his initiative to save himself and family from attack.
Errol Samsundar had just dropped off one of his workers at Mosquito Hall, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, on his way home, when he was ambushed by bandits.
It was around 20:00 hours and Samsundar, who hails from Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, was driving his canter truck along the dark and lonely Mahaica Public Road when a yellow wagon suddenly appeared in his path.
The businessman told Kaieteur News that his headlights shone on the car and he saw one of the occupants emerge from the vehicle and run into the bushes alongside the road. He immediately became suspicious and drove his truck onto the parapet to avoid contact with the car which had stopped in a position intended to block his path.
Samsundar said that as he was taking evasive action, he saw the man who had run into the bushes coming towards his vehicle with a gun pointed at him.
Nevertheless, he drove his truck towards the approaching man, causing him to seek self preservation instead of firing his weapon.
“I didn’t stop. Me truck nearly jam he down,” the businessman stated. He said that soon after he managed to get away, he glanced into his rearview mirror and saw the car speeding away towards Georgetown.
Samsundar eventually drove to the Mahaica Police Station where he reported his ordeal.
He said that despite the potential danger he faced, there was no way that he would have stopped.
“I woulda ram de car because I know dey can’t come to no station,” he told this newspaper.
