It has been a long time that Guyana’s Volleyball players have not being invited to participate in tournaments overseas on an individual basis. However, national power hitter Quacy Matheson has managed to break the jinx.
The Guyana Volleyball Federation granted him permission to take part in the Caribbean Volleyball League Tournament which is being played in Trinidad and Tobago and was scheduled to begin last Wednesday May, 29 and end yesterday Sunday June 2. Matheson left Guyana on the Friday, May 24 and is expected to return today.
The Tournament, which was endorsed by the FIVB (the World Body) and got the blessings of all affiliated bodies in the region, saw participation of teams and players from all the major clubs in the Region.
Mr. Matheson received an invitation to be a part of the tournament as a guest player with the Toco Youth Volleyball Team, a registered Trinidad and Tobago side.
The Guyana Volleyball Federation is proud of the selection of Matheson, a member of the Guyana Sugar Corporation and would like to thank his coach and mentor, former national captain Levi Nedd for his development and outstanding achievement so far.
According to a release for the GVF- Quacy Matheson is a member of the Port Mourant Training Centre team (PMTC) which is affiliated to the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) and his talent was noted during the GVF’s International Club tournament held late last year that featured teams from Brazil, Suriname, Trinidad and Guyana.
A recent visit to Trinidad by the PMTC again showcased Quacy’s talent and hence the invitation. The release noted, “Matheson’s participation is a great breakthrough for Guyanese players and the GVF plans to host another International Club tournament later in the year.”
Matheson was recently honoured by the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) as one of the top up and coming sports personality in Berbice and for his outstanding contribution towards the development of sports in the county especially Volleyball.
