The top schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje catchment area will once again take to the football field when play in the Inaugural Patrick “Patto” April Inter School U17 Knockout football competition kicks off today with two matches at the Scott’s Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam.
The competition, which is organised by the Hearts of Oak Master Football Club, will see eight schools participating in the 60 minutes encounters. The schools down to compete are – New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NAMS), New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS), Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (CSS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS) and School of the Nations (SON).
The one week competition will see eight matches being played over four days.
In the matches scheduled for today, CSS take on SON in the first game, while BHS will match skills with NATI in what is expected to be a close encounter.
Tomorrow’s games will see VESS coming up against BEI, while NAMS and TASS will collide in the second game.
Wednesday is semifinal day with the winners of today’s matches meeting in the first match, while Tuesday victors will take centre stage in the second encounter.
Thursday will see the teams clashing in the finals and the third place play off. Starting time on all the days is 14:30 hrs.
The presentation ceremony will take place immediately after the completion of the final.
The top three teams will be presented with trophies and other accolades, while there will also be prizes for the top individual performers including the most valuable player, best goalkeeper, best defender, the best midfielder and best striker.
Patrick April or “Patto” as he was known, was a popular football player and butcher in Berbice and Guyana who went on to represent Berbice on a number of occasions at various levels of the game. He once formed a potent combination with the famous Humphrey and Alphonso siblings that dominated the football arena. Coordinator of the tourney is Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey. (Samuel Whyte)
