Traffic police are trying to determine the real circumstances that led to the death of 56 year old Teril Changa, called ‘Mack’, following another road accident on the East Coast of Demerara on Saturday night.
Changa, of Kersaint Park (LBI ), who was employed as a labourer by a manufacturing company, was killed on the spot while crossing La Bonne Intention (LBI) Public Road around 22:00 hours.
Police detained the driver of a car, after the man admitted running over the lifeless body of the elderly labourer, which was lying in the middle of the roadway.
But there are suggestions that Changa was struck down by another driver who sped away, leaving him lying on the road.
His elder brother, Errol Changa, told this newspaper that he had seen Changa a few hours before he got the tragic news of the death.
He explained that while he does not know the real circumstances that led to his brother’s demise, he was told that Changa was the victim of a hit and run accident.
According to Errol Changa, his sibling, who was an alcoholic with no children, had left his aunt’s home around 19:00 hours.
“Apparently he was not drunk when he left his aunt’s home but I don’t know what transpired on the road. It was a cousin of mine who lives at the front that call me and said that Mack get knock down,” Errol Changa said.
He stated that when he went to the public road Changa was “lying there, already dead.”
He questioned the report given to the police by another motorist who claimed that he had witnessed the accident.
“A guy claimed that it was a Raum (that struck down Changa) and he say he drive off behind the car but he did not pick up the number plate. But somebody say that it showing like it was a woman driver,” Errol Changa told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News understands that except for a damaged licence plate, the car in custody shows little sign that is was involved in an accident.
Investigations are continuing.
