Hardat Tarson of Hardcore Gym stood out as the best Overall Lifter when the curtains came down on the 2013 edition of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) Intermediate Championships yesterday at the George Walcott Lecture Theater, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus.
Tarson’s category (74kg Male Open) started out with three competitors but by the end of the squats it was a straight showdown between himself {Tarson} and Paul Cheddie of Kingsrow Barbel Club as a result of Fitness Revolution’s Deonarine Dutt’s inability to make good on any of his three squat attempts.
After the three lifts, Tarson tallied 615kg; his Wilks Points totaled 448 delivering for him the top spot in his category and overall. Cheddie’s overall was 482.5kg with 362 Wilks Points.
Adrian Ramlall was all alone in the 59kg class with a total of 355kg and 316 Wilks Points.
Donnell Perry, who won the Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation (GABBFF) Novice Championships last year (2012), made a mark in the strong man arena with a top place finish in the 66kg division.
The Fitness Revolution Gym member shrugged off challenges from Kingsrow Barbel Clubs Leon Rupertie and his {Perry} gym mate Terry Dornalles to power to the top of the category, tallying 525kg (419 Wilks Points).
Also standing alone was Marino Jeffrey of Powerhouse Gym in the 93kg class; he recorded a total of 645kg (416 Wilks Points). Jeffrey also won the Open category at Novice this year, maintaining his winning ways.
Hardcore Gym’s Roshan Ally out-powered Mustapha Rohoman in the 120kg category, ending with a 625kg total (372 Wilks Points) to Rohoman’s 587.5kg and 338.46 Wilks Points.
GAPF President Peter Green in an invited comment stated that he was very pleased with the turn out and the level of commitment shown by the athletes which augurs well for the future of the sport in Guyana.
Green also stated that he was elated to have so many female athletes coming out and believes that this is the beginning of great things for females in the sport. He is encouraging gyms to encourage more females to come on board.
