Sensei of the Black Hawks Martial Arts Gym, Garfield Newton, has always boasted of the prowess of his charges and they in turn have delivered the goods to endorse such beliefs. Those Martial Arts practitioners have further strengthened their Sensei’s confidence when they carted off the lion’s share of the accolades on offer when Master Quacy Bavegins staged the Best of the Best Martial Arts Championships at the Albertown Police Station, Saturday May 25 last.
In all, five teams participated in the competition including Best of the Best Karate Club, Guyana Martial Arts Karate Association, Harpy Eagle’s Karate Club, Guyana Mix Martial Arts Karate Association and the Art Management Network Association.
The competitors competed in 8 events among them Weapons, Self Defense, 2 Kata events (traditional and free style), one Kumite team event and one Kumite individual event, a team sparring event and a team Kata event.
Consequently, the Black Hawks unit was declared overall champions after securing 17 first place spots, 11 second places and 6 third places.
The overall results read: 7-9 Kata Free style: Floyd Morris and Sulaymaan Hopkinson (1st and 3rd respectively). Kumite Sparring: Floyd Morris (1st), Sulaymaan Hopkinson (3rd). 10-12 Kata Free Style event: Isaiah Morris, Shaakirah Hopkinson and Ibreehem Ford (1st – 3rd respectively).
Kumite Sparring: Ibreehem Ford, Orlando McDonald and Isaiah Morris (1st – 3rd respectively). Females: Lateefah Hopkinson and Shaakirah Hopkinson (1st and 2nd respectively).
13-15yrs Kata Freestyle: Shiloh Cameron (1st), King Cameron (2nd). Kumite sparring: King Cameron. 16-17yrs – Joann Williams (female). 18-25 Kata: Christopher Thompson and Nicholas Braithwaite (1st and 2nd respectively).
Sparring: 1st – 3rd placing – Christopher Thompson, Michael Jones and Colwin Benn. Black Belt, Bertram Williams. 30 up sparring: Shirwin Newton (3rd). Team Kata: Black Hawks Terror (2nd). Team Sparring: Black Hawks Madhouse Crew finished in the first place while in the Grappling event (light/heavyweight) the 1st – 3rd placings were occupied by Colwin Benn, Michael Jones and Dewene Griffith respectively.
