National Pre-Cadet Champion, Jeremy Singh underwent International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Latin American Table Tennis Union (ULTM) training in Puerto Rico during May 23-29 that was geared at lifting his playing level to international standards.
A release from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) said Singh, a Caribbean Pre-Cadet bronze medalist, had adapted well to the training stint. Singh is also a member of the Malteenoes Sport Club team and son of former national player, Lisa Lewis.
“The training was organised by the Puerto Rican Federation of Table Tennis in
conjunction with the Latin American Table Tennis Union with support from International Table Tennis Federation and geared towards raising the level of Pre-Cadet players,” the release said.
Those players included those between 11 and 13 years old in the Caribbean; featuring players from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago. St. Kitts and Nevis, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, The Dominican Republic and Panama. The Camp also focused on players’ education.
The training sessions were held daily between 9am-6pm with physical, technical and theoretical sessions emanating from three coaches, namely Francisco Seijas (Venezuela), Afanador Eladio (Puerto Rico) and Bladimir Diaz (Puerto Rico).
The association said that Singh’s mother, who is a level one ITTF coach, accompanied him to the programme. Additionally, it was revealed that the association reneged on sending another player owed to late notice among other logistics.
“The association had looked at Miguel Wong, Terrence Rouche and Tauriq Saunders as possible candidates to benefit from the offer given that the offer was for two players. However, due to the late notice of the offer and logistical elements we were unable to add the other player,” the release noted.
“The training is truly helpful in providing the means of exposure in view of allowing Jeremy to play with players of a higher level at his similar age and improving his confidence; technical and tactical elements,” the GTTA release continued.
According to the document, the association is brokering similar training stints with Brazil and other table tennis-playing nations as it looks at new and innovative ways of raising the level of local players and bridging the gap with regional counterparts.
Singh was selected on the national squad slated to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Pre-Cadet Championships scheduled for August 10–16 in Guyana. He was scheduled to return from Puerto Rico yesterday.
