Powerlifting fans and supporters are in for a treat come next Sunday when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) brings off its National Intermediate and Claude Charles Memorial Championships at the University of Guyana, George Walcott Lecture Theatre.
According to the federation, it is continuing effort to develop its lifter base this year’s Intermediate will showcase the improved talents of the newcomers who competed at the Novices held earlier this year in New Amsterdam.
It will also give the lifters who failed then and those who were late, another chance to redeem themselves.
New kids on the block, Fitness Revolution Gym of East Coast Demerara will challenge for top honours. Their female members are expected to dominate their category through Novices Best Lifter {Women} Overall, Natoya Robinson and gym mates, Chittra Ramlochan and Shenella Austin.
Male lifters Deon Dutt, who did not complete his lift at the Novices, is expected to challenge Best Lifter {Men} Overall, Marino Jeffrey of Power House Gym for top honours leading up to the Senior Nationals.
The Claude Charles Memorial Championships features the exciting clash of World Masters II Champion and Dead Lift record holder Winston “Little Master” Stoby against the 2011 World Masters I Bronze medalist and 2009 Pan American Open Heavyweight gold medalist ‘Big’ John Edwards.
The athletes will be using this event as warm up for the upcoming Pan American Championships as well as the World Masters Championships scheduled for later this year.
Fast on their heels and aiming to upset is dark horse, the indefatigable Errol “Powder for Power” Henry, father of National Rugby Coach, Theodore Henry.
Guest lifters at this event, Osmond Mack and Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney will be on show with all eyes on Chesney as he executes the squat under the scrutiny of the judges to fine tune the remedial work on his technique which caused him to fail at two previous International Championships. He is hoping to make it right this time around.
Clubs and individual lifters participating are once again reminded that they must register with the Organizing Secretary Mr. Denroy Livan between 08:00 – 16:00hrs on tel# 226 1553. Timely registration will allow for the smooth functioning of the event.
Weigh in time on Sunday is 07:30 – 08:30hrs with warm up time set for 09:00 – 09:30hrs.
Competition time is 10:00hrs, sharp.
Sponsors on board to date for the championships are Ansa McAl under their Lucozade brand, International Pharmaceutical Agency and Fitness Express.
