Relatives of a United Kingdom-based Guyanese man are hoping that a post mortem examination will bring an end to all speculation after the man’s body was found in a house at Adelaide Street, Charlestown.
Reports are that 45-year-old Matthew Small stopped breathing while sleeping in the house around 15:00 hours and was later found to be dead.
One of the man’s close friends identified as ‘John’, said Small arrived in Guyana on April 26 last and was staying with a female acquaintance up onto the time of his death.
John told this publication that during Small’s visit to Guyana this time he began consuming alcohol at a very high level and this became worrying for persons close to him.
“This man got problems and he started confiding in me and I use to talk to he. I would tell he that drinking won’t solve the problem but he never use to listen”.
John said that on Thursday evening he saw Small trying to buy alcohol. He said that he took away the money to prevent him from drinking.
“He send a man to buy the rum for him and I stop the man and take away the money but then I find out he send somebody else to buy the rum. This man does just drink rum from the bottle and then drink chaser after.”
Further, there are reports that the man was having issues with the woman he was staying with, having discovered she may have been involved with another man.
Another relative who asked not to be identified said that she received a call saying that Small was sleeping and appeared to dead as he was not breathing. Reports are that calls were made to 911 but persons got no response.
After it was found that the man had no pulse and was not breathing the police were called in and eventually, the undertakers.
While relatives said they will keep their opinion to themselves pending the post mortem examination they are hoping that Small’s death was of natural causes.
