With the Health Ministry transferring the lone doctor operating at health facilities between Haslington and Hope, East Coast Demerara, many elderly patients, who went for their monthly check-ups at Victoria Health Centre yesterday, were turned away without medical attention.
The patients, who suffer from various ailments including diabetes and hypertension, were given the usual triage care but were unable to receive further treatment or medication since the doctor was no longer with the facility.
The doctor, Dr Ameeka Breedy, was responsible for health facilities between Haslington and Hope and about 11 nurses. She was stationed at Dr C.C. Nicholson Memorial Hospital, which operates daily. However, on specified clinic days she would service the various health centres in the district.
Yesterday, disappointment was splashed the faces of the elderly patients. Last month, they were unable to meet with Dr. Breedy since she had to attend a meeting. But she had left enough medications with the patients in March.
According to a patient, the doctor was only informed of the transfer to Linden, Region Ten less than two weeks ago. The patient said that the medical practitioner of Buxton Health Centre, Dr. David Nelson, is also being transferred to Linden.
The patients are questioning the Ministry’s motive for removing the two medical practitioners from the district that is well populated and situated away from the city.
While, residents of Buxton staged a mini protest earlier this week against the Ministry’s decision, patients of Victoria Health Centre sat for hours patiently waiting and hoping that the decision would be reversed.
The patients, who described the doctor as the “best”, said she has been operating at the facility for the past three years. Her caring nature and knowledge of their various ailments have made her irreplaceable to them.
The patients are unprepared to accept another doctor since for years they were treated by Cuban doctors and encountered a problem with the language barrier.
“Now that we finally get a doctor who knows everything about us they want to remove the woman. Can you imagine this doctor so good you have to say how you feeling and she know exactly what’s wrong with you? She is very accommodating and advises us about diet and exercise,” a worried patient said.
Another patient mentioned, “Many things are wrong with the health centre but this doctor performance makes it worth coming. We are poor but that doesn’t mean we should not get quality health services that are being provided by this doctor.”
