Teachers and students of the Richard Ishmael Secondary School have benefited from a health day project organized by the Old Students Association (OSA). Students of the school organized a health fair titled “Health Smart Day”, on May 15, 2013.
Many students and their teachers benefited from dental and optometry services offered by a health team. However Kaieteur News understands that the fair is the second of its nature where basic medical services are offered to the students and teachers of the school, following an initial visit from a health team in March.
Among the services offered were counseling on health and nutrition including checking Body Mass Index (BMI), Dental care, optometry, Blood sugar and pressure testing and Vaccine Information and Awareness.
The OSA has been receiving support from the Ministry of Health and, to a lesser extent, the New GPC as they seek to bring health care to their former educational institution.
Deputy Head Mistress Ms. Melanie Jones, said, “The venture was greatly appreciated by both teachers and students.”
She also noted that it was well organized and did not interrupt classes.
Secretary of the OSA, Fayne Bhudu, says that the group intends to make the health drive a monthly event, considering it as a successful one.
Budhu said that they will first need to analyze the outcome of the health drive.
