– Sparta Boss’ five still alive, Albouystown ‘B’ stunned
Fans of pre-tournament favorites Albouystown ‘B’, came out in large numbers Thursday night at Punt Trench and School Street to give the home side every bit of encouragement to ensure that it reach the Mackeson ‘Keep Your Five Alive’ final tonight.
But that was not to be owed to a dismal performance before their home crowd, which led to a shocking 3-4 defeat against Festival City on penalty kicks that gift-wrapped a place in tonight’s grand finale
on the National Cultural Centre Tarmac for underdogs, Festival City.
Sparta Boss, the other overwhelming favorites and West Front Road (WFR), who both recorded 1-0 victories over River View and Alexander Village respectively also advanced on what was the penultimate night of the 2013 competition.
Nathaniel Nagaloo entered the game as a substitute in the eighth minute and stunned the crowd one minute later with a well placed shot. WFR then magnified their defence, preventing Shem Porter and Quincy Jerome from nullifying their lead in the remainder of the game.
Rasville and Vryheid’s Lust competed in the first exhibition game after that quarterfinal encounter, with the former winning via penalty kicks to take home their prize of one case of Mackeson Stout, compliments of Ansa McAl Limited.
Albouystown ‘B’, boasting Shaka Jones, Roy Samuels and Devon Forde in their lineup, took the venue to a ruckus crowd. However, those cheers fell on the deaf ears of the drones that also came from the Festival City area to back their team.
The Festival City lineup, which included Odell Williams, Adell Bailey, Mark Williams and Paul Bobb was undaunted. They controlled the game, forcing Jones to go deep into his half to get the ball on several occasions, forcing Albouystown ‘B’ on the defensive.
Both teams relentlessly attacked each other’s goal in the second half without success before the Festival City side stunned Albouystown ‘B’ supporters on ‘Sudden Death’ penalty kicks to be in the reckoning tonight for the $300,000 first place prize.
With their favorite team evicted, fans threw their support behind Sparta Boss, the North East-based team, in a clear indication of choice over the North Georgetown-based Festival City and West-based, WFR in their game.
Sparta Boss’ 1-0 win against Riverview came via a Jermaine Weekes penalty kick despite some appeals to the referee to avoid the call. Weekes made the conversion with ease to ensure that his team is among the money tonight on the Culture Centre tarmac.
The names of the three teams will be placed in a bag tonight to decide who plays who and what will be the format. The finale kicks off at 8pm and Mackeson is promising a night of giveaways under the brand with maximum entertainment.
