A second suspect is expected to be charged for the murder of police corporal Romain Cleto. Kaieteur News understands that Riverview, Ruimveldt resident, Reagan Rodrigues, 34, called ‘Grey Boy is expected to appear in court today.
This newspaper was told by relatives of the man that he was arrested on Monday afternoon. This newspaper was told that policemen went to his River View home and arrested him.
According to relatives he was taken to the Eve Leary Police Station where he was questioned. Kaieteur News was told that at the time of the shooting Rodrigues was in the company of several persons, who are willing to attest to this. The suspect’s family questioned the motive for his arrest, stating that the police were targeting him.
Relatives yesterday described Rodrigues as someone who had several brushes with the law but has since changed.
On Monday last East Rumiveldt resident Chaka Chase was charged with the murder. His relatives along with his two lawyers Nigel Hughes and James Bond are arguing that Chase was tortured into admitting to the crime. Also several persons including a police rank were drinking with Chase when the shooting happened.
These persons have all given statements to Hughes who dispatched them to the Director of Public Prosecutions. During Chase’s court appearance on Monday it was noted that the DPP had not given advice into the matter. The file was ordered to her office and she is expected to give her advice today.
Cleto was approaching the vehicle on foot when the occupants opened fire with what is believed to be an AK-47 assault rifle and a nine-millimeter handgun. Corporal Cleto was buried with full military honours.
