Dear Editor,
The Organization of African Unity is celebrating its 50th anniversary formation in 2013. As part of these celebrations, there is a planned OAU/AU 50th anniversary summit from May 19, through May 27, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. According to AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Dr. Aisha Abduallahi, “world leaders and heads of government expected during the week long gathering are those from Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Republic of Ireland, Russia, Serbia and Sweden.”
Interestingly, no mention was made if the government of Guyana would be in attendance, and if so, will the representation to this symbolic event be at the level of Head of State or Prime Minister.
Given that Guyana and Guyanese political and academic leaders have historically had strong ties to Africa and African solidarity, how does one interpret this non-attendance? Over the years, we have seen interesting attempts to cement relations with the Republic of Iran at the level of State visits. Our Head of State even found his way on the road to Damascus so as to affirm our strong ties with President Bashar Al- Assad and the people of Syria.
It is therefore curious and revealing that the critical issue of showing solidarity with the African nations by our presence at the anniversary summit of our brothers and sister who have historically stood with us. Information from the anniversary secretariat reveals that Guyana’s participation is the mere delivery of a diplomatic note.
