The Executive of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) have intensified activities ever since the start of the year and following several successful tournaments in Georgetown, will now shift activities to Enterprise East Coast Demerara and in collaboration with the Enterprise Scrabble Club (ESC), stage the Annual Enterprise Scrabble Competition at the Playland Italiano Restaurant in that very East Coast Demerara village on Independence Day, Monday May 27 next.
The organisers are anticipating a large turnout and will stage a three tiered tournament consisting of Beginner’s, Class A and Class B.
Players will be categorized based on their current rating with the Beginners being those that have never competed in any GASP organized tournament. Class A consists of those players ranked above 1700 while Class B players are those rated below. The Beginners are those that are still to attain a GASP rating
Likewise, there will be a two tiered entrance fee with beginners paying $300 while the other two categories will be required to pay $700.
The tournament will be sponsored by the proprietor of Playland Italiano Restaurant, Shankar Dyal and the registration process gets underway at 09:45am for a 10:00hrs start to the championships.
Meanwhile a strong team will leave Georgetown and will aspire to outshine the Enterprise squad. That village has produced players of exceptional quality the likes of Devraj Deonarine, who had dropped just three 8 games in the Caribbean Individual Championships in August last year. Other notable players out of the ESC are Kamta Ramnarine, Anand Mohabir, Ashwant Satyamand and Kamta Ramnarine.
Ramnarine has been instrumental in guiding the youths from the area in the proficiency of the game and reports are that a strong contingent of novice players will compete in that category including Jonathan Ramnarine, Mohanram Ramnarine, Romario Gonsalves and Wazeer Dilipchand among others.
The Georgetown contingent will be led by national champion, Abigail McDonald, her predecessor, Fred Collins, Moen Gafoor, Grace Hercules, Ruby Cummings, Wayne Cave and Colin Chichester among others. Participants are asked to walk with their scrabble sets and clocks.
