… to register villagers’ disapproval on the deplorable roads
There is a belief that only protest will get the government to fulfill its mandate to people, hence, residents of Port Kaituma, Region One have decided to stage a massive protest to register their disapproval over the deplorable roads they are being forced to use.
Yesterday, a resident from that mining district, David said that a letter has already been sent to the Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell requesting permission to stage the protest. “As soon as permission is granted, action will be in full swing,” he said.
David could not say how long the protest would last but he stated that “enough is enough.”
He explained that residents have been forced to use the deplorable roads for the past five years.
Numerous complaints have been made to government officials but residents believe that the ruling party has turned a blind eye on that district and the only hope for them to get better roads is to go out on the streets with placards.
During a recent visit to that community by this newspaper, it was observed that the roads were in a deplorable state and taxi drivers and other villagers were overheard complaining bitterly. “From the time you left the Port Kaituma airstrip straight to the hospital and to the Waterfront area is bad, in fact, all the roads are bad,” a taxi driver said.
The roads are almost impassable, with craters ranging from 10 to 16 inches in depth and with the remoteness of the area, accessing vehicle spares to replace those that are constantly being damaged, is becoming more of an expense burden.
When Kaieteur News tried to contact the Regional Executive Officer (REO), Nigel Fisher for a comment on the roads, the calls were unanswered.
