– Urges ranks to “lock up down to your friend”
Acting Commissioner of Police, Leroy Brumell, on Friday emphasised the importance of professionalism to be at the forefront of each police rank’s day to day duty.
The Top Cop made the call at the passing out parade on Friday at the Tactical Services Unit Square, Eve Leary, where some 130 constables graduated.
The ranks were from the probationer’s Final Training Course, Recruit Courses 308 and 309 and Immigration Course No 1/2013.
Brumell charged the policemen and women to be good ambassadors and to act professionally in their communities. “It is the only way to get respect.”
The Commissioner said that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recognised the need for continued training.
As he highlighted that training involves education, Brumell quoted to the gathering made up of fellow officers and relatives of those who graduated that “the greatest weapon you can truly use when instituting change is to educate.”
He said that ranks are being trained both locally and overseas. “There are two groups of police officers in Trinidad, one set in Russia and one set in Korea undergoing training.”
The acting commissioner urged the lot not to fall among thorns. ”I expect you to go out there and not fall among any thorns, be responsible, and maintain law and order, and we expect when you go out there, you do your utmost.
He added that the first arrest he made was his neighbour “even though we were friends.”
Brumell told the ranks that they need to view themselves as ambassadors in this “noble” organisation.
The programme began with a parade march, followed by an inspection. The course reports were done by Senior Superintendent Paul Williams, the Force’s training officer, who disclosed that each rank was evaluated based on attendance, presentation, conduct, and attitude inside and outside of the Force.
Based on the evaluation, the top performers were selected from each course.
Woman Constable Wilson was the recipient of the Baton of Honour. From the Recruit Course 308, Constable Vanhersel was the best student, Constable Barkoye was the Best Classroom Student, and Constable Mc Clintock was the most improved student.
Then from Recruit Course 309, the best student was Constable Bovell, the Best Classroom Student was Constable Munesh, and the Most Improved Student was Constable Burgess. The best student and the Best Classroom Student from the immigration course were Constable Armstrong and Constable Stewart respectively.
