It is being described as the biggest match to hit the Rifle Ranges here in the Caribbean apart from the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games that were hosted in Kingston, Jamaica which saw 34 countries competing in 10 sports, Pistol and Rifle Shooting being a part of those games.
We are talking of the Australia Match today at the Paragon Rifle Ranges, Christ Church, Barbados which will feature the Aussies taking aim against the world topping Great Britain, West Indies, Canada and the Channel Islands (Magpies).
The buzz around the ranges is one of high expectation with all the teams going through their final practice sessions at the 300, 600, 900 and 1000 Yards Ranges yesterday. The said ranges will be contested today from 08:00hrs for the Australia trophy.
West Indies Team Captain, Guyanese Paul Slowe believes that this is a grand occasion for the Caribbean team noting that the last time the West Indies shot as a team was in Canada in 2008.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for us after a long time so we have to capitalize on it and aim to do the best we can. The fact that we are coming up against world class opposition means that it will bring out the best in us and we are looking forward to this match.”
The Great Britain side, which was on a 4-nation Caribbean tour before their final stop in Barbados for the West Indies Fullbore Rifle Shooting Council Championships, have won in every territory (Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago) and will be the team to beat today.
Great Britain’s Captain Nigel Penn in an invited comment said that things have gone well for them so far on tour, while noting that the winds in Barbados have been very challenging to date but they are enjoying it.
“From a British point of view we are very pleased, we’ve won all the matches that we have been challenged to so far, we’ve beaten the opposition but the most important match to win is Saturday and we are ready and prepared for it.”
Penn, who is on his fourth tour to the Caribbean, the previous being 2006, said that he has noted improvements over the years but more can be made.
“I feel that some of the West Indian countries are suffering from lack of gun smiting, good advice for adjustment of triggers, proofing of barrels and bedding of guns; it’s all important to individual and team shooting and we try and help the local territories wherever we visit and yes always see improvements.”
