…company scales back operations to meet Linden’s power demands
Linden’s bauxite company, Bosai Minerals Group Inc, yesterday admitted that it is facing problems with its generators and is now forced to scale down its operations to ensure residents of that Region Ten community are provided with enough power.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, which has
jurisdiction over the mining sector, yesterday disclosed that it has been advised by the management of Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. (Bosai) that it has encountered difficulties with power generation at Linden.
Both Minister Robert Persaud and Prime Minister Sam Hinds, who has responsibilities for electricity in the country, have been apprised of the situation, the Ministry said yesterday.
“The bauxite company has assured the Minister that efforts are being made to repair three damaged power generating units.
“Further, the Minister was advised by the company that it will be scaling down its bauxite operation so that the power can be distributed to be utilized by the Linden community.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry said, various stakeholders will be reviewing the situation today to have a normalization of power generation to service Linden soonest.
Bosai, a Chinese company, has been providing electricity to Lindeners since taking over the Linden bauxite operations in 2006. Region Ten, in its heyday, was a powerhouse to the country’s economy before government was forced to shut the plant down as bauxite prices fell on the world market.
Government over the years has been subsidizing the power to the community as part of the package to ease the hardships of the Lindeners.
Last year, a move by Government to raise electricity rates led to protests which shut that town down for one month and led to the shooting death of three protestors.
That electricity hike has been placed on a hold.
Bosai Minerals Group purchased Omai Bauxite Mining Inc. (OBMI) in December 2006 and the company was renamed Bosai Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. Bosai Minerals holds 70 per cent shares of the new company which is controlled by the Guyana Government.
