Top cyclists, Paul DeNobrega, Raynauth Jeffrey, Raul Leal and Christopher Holder recently returned from a month long sojourn in Columbia where they had undergone stiff training and the four riders will be out to show off what they have learnt when the first two stages of the 31st edition of the annual 3 stage road race gets underway this morning.
The cyclists will journey from Corriverton at 07:30hrs today for the
46.6 miles journey to New Amsterdam. They return later in the day, at 14:00hrs for the journey to Carifesta Avenue, a distance of 60.4 miles. The race continues tomorrow morning from Kara Kara, proceed along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway for the grand finish in front of the old Ministry of Housing building, Homestretch Avenue.
Fans would have had a sneak preview of the competitiveness of today’s activity from last Sunday’s 50 lap event organized by the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) in collaboration with the Guyana Beverage Inc. Alonzo Greaves had ridden a tactical race to triumph over a field of top riders including Orville Hinds, Jude Bentley, Paul Choo-wee-nam and Harris Burrows. Add the presence of Paul DeNobrega, Eric Sankar, Geron Williams and Rastaff O’Selmo and the anticipation of a scorching encounter intensifies.
Last year, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony, had implored the riders to strategize, adapting a more cooperative spirit. He had mentioned such strategies employed by the team Coco representatives who had clinched the lion’s share of the prizes. Mr. Anthony is expected to be at the finishing line tomorrow morning.
Most of the overseas riders, especially of the Cocos team, will not be here this weekend, but the local junior brigade is expected to represent. Fast times and a competitive race is expected today and tomorrow.
