A five-man crew is safe and sound after their vessel ‘Shark’ began encountering problems while at sea late Wednesday afternoon. The vessel, said to be owned by Maritime Administration, was on its way to the North West District.
According to Transport Minister Robeson Benn, the Maritime Administration received a distress signal from the vessel. At the time the boat was said to be some 10 miles off Leguan Island in the Atlantic.
The captain and crew reported to Maritime officials that the vessel was taking in water and had an engine failure.
Minister Benn said that a search and rescue centre was immediately set up and the Coast Guard’s Kakabelly vessel was sent out to sea. However throughout Wednesday evening no contact was made with ‘Shark’. Benn added that when the rescue vessel reached the location other fishing boats had also been alerted.
Fortunately, early yesterday morning it was reported that the vessel had drifted to Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast, and all of its crew members were safe.
