Owing to the fact that he overstayed his time in Suriname, Su Jeng, a 27-year-old Chinese national, entered Guyana illegally on his way back from the said country. Presiding yesterday over the related case at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was Magistrate Judy Latchman, who read the particulars of the charge to the defendant.
The charge stated that on February 6, at Springlands, Corentyne, Su entered Guyana by sea and failed to present himself to an immigration officer. The defendant pleaded guilty.
According to Prosecutor Hunte, Su, who is the owner of a Republic of China passport, is a regular visitor to Guyana. The defendant also has a valid work permit from the Ministry of Labour which will remain applicable until 2014.
Further, on August 8, last, the defendant left legally Guyana through Moleson Creek port and travelled to Suriname where he was granted a one-month stay. On February 6, 2013, he returned to Guyana illegally. On May 13, the defendant was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and when he presented his passport, an immigration officer noticed that there was no entry stamp showing his return to Guyana from Suriname. He was then questioned and related to the officials that he came to Guyana via backtrack from Suriname. He was then arrested and charged for the said misdemeanor.
Attorney at law Paul Fung-A-Fat stood in Su’s defense, stating that his client has been living in Guyana for the past 12 years at 413 Enterprise, East Coast Demerara and operates a Chinese restaurant. He added that his client is currently trying to apply for citizenship and begged the court for mercy as he only returned to Guyana because he overstayed his time in Suriname.
Magistrate Latchman empathically told the defendant “What you did was wrong and your actions are not tolerated by the law. You are hereby fined $70,000 or 6 months imprisonment. Do not do something like this again.”
