The Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant who is presently before the court on armed robbery charges was dismissed from the organization following last Friday’s conclusion of court martial proceedings against him.
Lieutenant Madainey Humphrey was implicated in an alleged robbery attempt at the Julian Ross Landing in January this year, when he reportedly led a gang of ganga-smoking soldiers to the area.
A statement from Army Headquarters Camp Ayanganna stated that the GDF, upon investigating the matter, took the decision to court martial the Lieutenant who was found to have disobeyed a lawful command. He was also found to have been in breach of the Force’s Standing Orders, charges to which he pleaded guilty.
His sentence to dismissal was unanimous. He was represented by Attorneys at Law Mr. Bernard DaSilva and Ms. Beverly Bishop.
On April 22, Lieutenant Humphrey appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer to the charge of robbery under arms. The matter has been transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
“The Guyana Defence Force reiterates that, it will not waiver in its complete intolerance for indiscipline and will continue to hold its members accountable for any diversion from its Standing Operation Procedures,” the statement said.
Following reports of the alleged incident, Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best visited the area and assured miners that the Guyana Defence Force would deal condignly with the officer and his ranks if they were found to be culpable.
He had indicated that bringing the soldiers to justice will send a signal to other ranks in the Guyana Defence Force that such behaviour has serious consequences and that there was no way it would be allowed to continue.
He had also issued a statement in the form of a paid advertisement that no member of the Guyana Defence Force has the authority to inspect any mining licences or inter-meddle into any mining activities once they are not accompanied by an official of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.
“Members of the mining community must not submit themselves to any actions by Officers and soldiers of the Guyana Defence Force acting alone with respect to enforcement of laws governing mining in Guyana,” the Chief-of-Staff had stated.
He made it clear that the Joint Services stand ready to work with the mining community to make their operational environment safe and peaceful.
