Totaram Mootoo’s killers forced him to lie near his wife with his hands bound before triggering an explosion that practically roasted him alive in their Guysuco Scheme, East Coast Demerara home last Thursday.
Detectives now hope to know the identity of the killers from surveillance camera footage that they have acquired.
The brutality of Thursday’s double execution was fully revealed yesterday when a postmortem showed that the Mootoos were still alive when the gas cylinder exploded in their bedroom. According to police sources, cause of death was from extensive burns and smoke inhalation. He had also sustained blunt trauma to the head. He wife also sustained blunt trauma.
Investigators had at first suspected that the Mootoos were shot dead before the fire was set, especially since some residents claimed to have heard gunshots prior to the explosion.
Kaieteur News understands that police are now in possession of footage from a surveillance camera and hope that the cameras would have picked up the killers arrival and departure. They are also reportedly checking phone records of the victims’ most recent calls.
The charred bodies of 54-year-old Totaram Mootoo, called ‘Beer’, and 48-year-old Bhagmattie Mootoo, called ‘Dolly’, were discovered early Friday morning in their master bedroom.
Mr. Mootoo’s hands were bound behind his back with duct tape while his wife had an arm around her husband.
Fragments of a gas cylinder were found near the bed.
Police have received reports from residents who claimed that they saw a car with heavily-tinted windows driving away from the area shortly after hearing the explosion.
