Alonzo Greaves rode a tactical race to triumph over a field of top riders when the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) collaborated with the Guyana Beverage Inc. under their VIVA Water brand, and staged the Cycling Classic event, over 50 laps around the Seawall Band Stand yesterday morning.
Orville Hinds also demonstrated grit and determination to seal off the second place while Jude Bentley defied the odds to close off the podium spots. Robin Persaud occupied the 4th position while Paul Choo-wee-nam and Harris Burrows finished 5th and 6th respectively. Greaves claimed 6 of the prime points on offer, 3 more than Bentley, while Choo-wee-nam won two.
The women’s category was contested over 15 laps and Shauna Doris rode a smart race to upset favourite Marcia Dick, while Junior Niles rode off with the top prize in the Veteran’s category. Raymond Newton finished second followed by Ian Jackson.
The junior category was won by Hamzah Eastman who finished just in front of Andre Abdool, while Jabon Crawford closed off the podium spots.
Most of the riders viewed the race as valuable preparation for the National Sports Commission (NSC) Independence 3-Stage Road Race scheduled to commence on Saturday May 18 next. If what was witnessed yesterday morning is indicative of what is to come in the 3 stage event then cycling fans could gear up for a blistering encounter.
The riders started off at a brisk pace and they were bunched for the first 6 laps until Greaves and Persaud edged ahead, leaving the trailing pack about 300 meters behind. Tactical riding saw Hinds closing the gap to join the front runners and before three more laps had been completed Bentley, Choo-wee-nam and Burrows joined the front runners to engage in a tactical battle for the next 10 laps when Greaves and Hinds broke away from the group. These two powered around the course, each employing wily tactics to stay ahead. They reached the turn by the CID Headquarters simultaneously and Hinds attempted to power home; his efforts were futile as Greaves proved to be the stronger sprinter.
Meanwhile, Ms Shameeza Yadram, representative of the Guyana Beverages Inc, witnessed the event and later assisted with the presentation of prizes. President of Roraima Bikers Club, Brain Allen, was also at the event.
