Despite his remorseful appeals to the court, Kevin Maloney was remanded to prison for the charge of robbery which was read to him by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The particulars of the charge read that on May 8, within the vicinity of Georgetown, the defendant robbed Marissa Parris of one gold bracelet worth $80,000.
Maloney pleaded not guilty with explanation. He explained to the court that he had known the woman for some time and they were at the Big Market having a drink together. During that time, the woman’s bracelet slipped off her hands and he picked it up, only to return it to her, but she suddenly started shouting “thief” and accused him of robbing her.
The prosecution rose at this point to refute the alleged false utterances of the defendant that were made in open court. Prosecutor Alexis David-Hossanah stated that the defendant does not know the virtual complainant. Secondly, police reports stated that Parris was walking along the Bourda Market area and the Maloney followed her for some time until he finally snatched the bangle from her hand. She turned around, and they got into a scuffle as she tried to retrieve her property. Public spirited citizens then intervened and held onto the suspect. Maloney was then taken to the station, where he was charged with the said offence.
He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on May 16.
