The Ancient Conference of the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) tips off at the Port Mourant Training School Hard Court tomorrow while the Georgetown Conference continues the following day at the Marian Academy Hard Court.
Director of Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), which is the host of the NSBF, Chris Bowman told Kaieteur Sport that President’s College will play Plaisance in an U-20 game that was supposed to be held on Sunday, but was moved owed Mother’s Day, on Saturday.
Guyana’s premier schools basketball competition that started last weekend with games in
several parts of Guyana, aims to develop and maintain a well-coordinated national championships for the boys and girls teams; improve existing basketball infrastructure in schools; encourage the mental and physical wellness through youth sport and emphasise leadership, citizenship, scholarship and athletic excellence among young people.
The NSBF started in 2006 with 18 schools in a single elimination tournament. From its inception it has been a partnership between the National Sport Commission (NSC) and YBG to develop an independent and structured basketball programme for schools.
Today, the programme has grown to include almost 50 schools participating first for ranking in five separate Regional Conferences for qualification for the National Championships. National titles are contested in three age groups and players are identified for the Junior Elite programme for a chance to be selected for the Inter-Guiana Games.
