Through a collaborative effort, which commenced some five years ago, the delivery of health care will for the next few days be supported through the Carol Gordon Ministries of the United States, a medical outreach with a religious flair.
The team, which is led by its founder, and Owner/Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Nursing Services, a health care agency located in Washington D.C., Carol Gordon, yesterday commenced offering minor health care services out of the Harvest -Time New Testament Church of God at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.
And according to Overseer Bishop of the 65 New Testament Church of God in Guyana, Joseph Persaud, it is anticipated that at least 1,000 individuals will be attended to over the course of the four-day mission. He disclosed that as the oldest and continuing church in the world, the New Testament Church of God has been in Guyana for just over 60 years.
“We are involved in ministering of the word, developing the lives of people, but I think the gospel commission for us is more than just preaching the word and to develop the whole man.”
Moreover, Bishop Persaud noted that plans were made to have medical missions come to Guyana to attend to the health concerns of local individuals through outreaches. Acts of benevolence also constitute the missions, one of which was facilitated by another team a few years ago. That outreach was held at the West Demerara Secondary School where some 400 persons were attended to.
The current outreach, Bishop Persaud disclosed, will continue today at St Cuthbert’s
Mission, an Amerindian Village on the Mahaica River, then move to Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara the following day. The last day of the medical outreach will be held at the World Vision Church of God, David Street, Kitty, Georgetown,
The outreach which is premised on volunteerism and “a ministry from our hearts” is financed mainly by Reverend Gordon and donations from friends in the United States. And although medical supplies were provided by a few pharmaceutical companies in her homeland, Reverend Gordon said that every effort will be made to ensure that persons requiring medication will be given the type that will be easily accessible right here.
Although Reverend Gordon has led medical outreaches to earthquake-hit Haiti, in October 2010, Panama, and several times to Jamaica, the land of her birth, this is the first time that she has led one to Guyana. However, she is optimistic that such ventures here will be sustained, as she anticipates the team could return within a year or two.
Ably supported by several medical experts, including a few appointed by the Ministry of Health, the overseas team comprises doctors, physician assistants, pharmacists, registered nurses, one dentist, dental assistants and administrative personnel.
“We are offering diabetic, blood pressure and cholesterol screening; anything that is not major medical we will be attending to, including fungus on children and flu. Once it is minor medical we will deal with it,” Reverend Gordon said, while informing that the first case attended to yesterday was beyond the team’s allowed capacity.
According to her, the patient was found to have an ulcer on the knee that required
the attention of a hospital, moreover moves were immediately made to have him taken to a local health facility.
But even as medical care is delivered in the day, some members of the team have plans to engage in nocturnal activities as well. According to Reverend Gordon, who is a licenced, ordained Minister of the Gospel in the New Testament Church of God, some of the team’s members will be using their time at nights to preach the gospel.
Among those who will be so engaged will be international evangelist, Dr Jessica Pryce, whose expectation is that “people will have a closer walk with the Lord and there will be hope for the hopeless and they will have a greater understanding of God’s word.”
