Angry family members and neighbours were late last evening combing the Vreed-en-Hoop seawall area after a man reportedly stabbed his 14-year-old step-daughter, Fenella Samuels, several times. She later succumbed at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
Her mother, Mildred Rose, was forced to flee her home at Plastic City Squatting area, an area bordering Vreed-en-Hoop and the seawall.
Police in a statement said that the teen, a student of Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary, was fatally stabbed by her stepfather during a family misunderstanding.
According to the girl’s mother, Mildred Rose, who was at the hospital receiving treatment, the incident happened around 20:00 hrs shortly after a visit to the police station.
“Somebody take away she phone and we went to make a report.”
The mother and the teen returned home and shortly after an argument developed between the stepfather, 63, and the girl.
“She wanted to go out and I tell her don’t go and she raise her voice.”
The mother said that the stepfather slapped the girl and she ran for a hammer. In the meantime, the man had blocked the door and refused to move to allow the girl out.
It was reported that the man was drinking earlier in the day.
The argument escalated and the teen went to a bedroom where she called a neighbour, asking her to sleep at their home. Her stepfather, becoming more incensed, followed her into the bedroom with a knife and reportedly attacked her. The mother initially tried to block one of stabs and was badly cut on her hands.
At home also was the girl’s nine-year-old brother who said he witnessed the stabbing.
According to the mother, seeing the rage in her husband, she became scared and ran out of the home with her little son to the police station not far away at the Vreed-en-Hoop junction.
By the time she returned with police, her daughter had been taken to the hospital.
A teenaged neighbour said that he and others heard the screams and ventured into the home.
Fenella was lying on the bed and groaning and bleeding profusely.
“I lift she up and we carry she through the back fence of the hospital.” She died not long after. The hospital is located not far from the girl’s home.
She was said to have been stabbed at least 16 times, including to her face and leg.
Fenella is said to have five other siblings, four of whom live elsewhere.
Neighbours expressed shock at the brutality of the crime.
A family member said that the stepfather reportedly lost his job at a snack distribution company only Tuesday and was planning to go to the “bush” to work.
He reportedly was seen carrying around a “Rambo” knife.
The stepfather had reportedly done some prison time previously.
